Well first of all, the hotel is very close to Comerica park and Ford field. Those were the two places we were going, so that was a bonus. There is no parking for the hotel, except for on the street in front of it. So we had to park in the Opera House parking and pay $10, at other times its $20. So no discounted parking was a bummer. Check-in was a snap. We just got a standard room and it was tiny. There was just a ceiling light, no lamps on the stand. The window air-conditioner had no plastic on the sides of it, so it was open to the outside. The bathroom was small and had shower residue from the previous visitors. The bed was comfortable for a hotel bed. The continental breakfast was one of the best I've ever had.

Got to room, and was nonsmoking. Called the desk and said I requested a smoking room, they told me to go ahead and smoke in the room!!! She said everyone does this, and someone would bring up ashtray for me. (What does this do to people with an allergy to smoke?) Went to the bathroom, and no shower curtain. The girl came up right away and was very nice and friendly, and gave us walking directions to casino. Came back and while waiting for the elevator, the girl at the front desk said she had run out of clean rooms. We went to the baseball game and came back for the night and found the bed was so bad-springs coming up-that my husband slept on top of bedspread for a little cushioning and still could not sleep. This was our anniversary trip, and this was very disappointing to say the least. Got up in the morning to make coffee, and discovered a half pot of coffee with MOLD COVERING THE COFFEE POT!!! This was not a couple days mold, it had to be at least 4-5 days worth it was so thick. I would not stay again at this hotel. The price was not that great a savings. Then when we left, we had to pay another $15 for parking-that was $30 for overnight parking. There is no street parking at all in the location. I would not stay at this hotel ever again, even if it was free.

The Milner is an independent, budget-priced "Historic" hotel in Downtown Detroit. "Historic" here equates to tiny rooms, spartan amentities, and a trapezoid-shaped elevator. If you're OK with all that, then the Milner is the best deal in town. My friends and I rented one suite (with kitchen) and one standard room for a four-day trip. The rooms were laughably small and oddly laid out (sink in the living room?!), and the beds are a bit saggy. Also, the kitchen in the suite had no microwave, cookware or utensils? Who travels with their own pots and pans?! The A/C was a bit weak, and much of the interior might be original to the 19th Century decor. Don't expect fine linens, towels, or a big-screen TV, either. Still, we were there to see the city, not the hotel, and the overall the Milner was clean and in good working order. It's not a stopover for prostitutes and derelicts like some of the ratty independent motels downtown - there was a always a security guard in the lobby, though you can expect the usual panhandlers within shouting distance of the front door. I'd let my kids roam the halls, but not the neighborhood. The opera house next door has a huge and reasonably priced parking garage. All in all, I feel like we got a great deal here - we stayed at the Milner for literally less than half of what it would have cost to stay at one of the big chain hotels, and it's within walking distance of everything from Greektown to Cobo Hall to Hart Plaza. If you're not expecting luxury, and if you can deal with its, ah, idiosyncracies, then the Milner is a terrific value.

We chose to stay at the Milner because it was very inexpensive and located very near the venue where we were attending a concert. The room was very small and the service was pretty average but the room was clean. If you are attending an event at Comerica Park, Ford Field, or the Filllmore Theater and are not looking to spend a lot of time in your room anyway, it's a good value for a place to crash. If you are looking for amenities stay elsewhere.

We stayed here for one night to avoid having to drive home after the electronic music fest. We actually found it's old style to be unique, and as for a place to crash, it definitly worked. See you next year Milner!
