The Scottsdale area is full of very upscale hotels and very upscale prices. It is truly a beautiful area and easy to see why the hotels can command such hefty fees. A couple of friends recommended a couple of the more upscale hotels to me. I ended up booking The Scottsdale Resort because: (1) we planned this trip at the last minute, and the more upscale hotels were not available on our planned travel dates, and (2) I played with other dates and was quite stunned with the prices of those other hotels. I admit I've become rather picky about comfort, but I just didn't want to spend as much money as the 5-star hotels commanded on this trip. I can easily give this hotel 4 stars - it was still pricey, but a little closer to what I planned to spend. The beds were quite comfortable. We had a deluxe room with 2 queens and it was relatively large compared to many hotels I've stayed at. Everything was clean and well-kept. Furnishings were classic and the bathroom included marble floors and counters. I was hesitant to book this hotel at first, because of the reviews that said the hotel was in need of updates. So, I found myself looking for this when we arrived. I agree that the hotel does seem a little dark in general. Yes, a fresh coat of paint in areas would help, but it really didn't bother me. Personally, I thought the dark woodwork was beautiful. We were also out exploring most of the time during the day. I might feel otherwise, if I was looking to relax around the resort most of the trip however. I think the web site photos are pretty realistic as to what to expect.

The * dollars a day resort fee I thought was un called for. I ate at the breakfast buffet and was given a card saying buy one meal and get another for free. The lady informed me that was only good if you had two people. well since I was alone I should have been given this discount anyway. I payed for a room with two beds why shouldn't I receive the benifit of the breakfast discount.

The Scottsdale Resort is nice, but could be a great place if they spent some money upgrading it. The ivy needs to be removed off of the poolside wall. The rooms need to be repainted modern colors. We stayed in a Casita Suite. The room was comfortable and large. However, everything needs to be updated. They did put granite counter-tops in, however some interior design and upgrades would make this a stellar place. The pull out bed was marginal and the doors and trim could use an upgrade. Even the locks on the doors were old and in need of repair/ replacement. The lounge was great for relaxing, and playing pool, and the food was good. Especially the salsa and hamburgers. On all of the times that we ate on site, the wait staff was very friendly, and did a great job. The hotel staff was friendly, however the concierge needed to know more about the area and be a little more friendly. She must have been new to the area. More lighting in the lobby would help as it is really dark and old feeling. We came to Scottsdale to get some light and sun, so coming in to a dark reception area didn't help our cause. The restaurant menu was marginal, and we were shocked when we got the ticket for the buffet. It is way overpriced for what was offered. However the food was fresh and they offered eggbeaters and regular eggs which you don't always see in a buffet. The bicycles were a nice touch and we rode every day on a local trail. The gym is small but has a great selection, including free weights and a bench press. The saunas need to be upgraded, and only one was working.

This is my second time staying at Scottsdale Resort. The rooms are spacious, and accomandation are very lovely. Overall, services are very good. My complaint, was my toliet stopped up twice, the many unlock doors at all times of the night, individual sleeping on the sofa in the hallway near the elevator, excessive kids playinging the resort hallway and a family having a snack in the middle of the hallway.

It was a nice, beautiful property in a quiet part of town. I liked all of that. But when I got there, the front desk staff was a little surly and not very helpful. They also surprised me with $* in fees that were not mentioned previously for items that I was not planning on using anyway. When asked what specifically it was for was told, "It's a property usage fee. You just pay it. Everyone pays it." The room was nice, but it seems that the doors in the Casita area where I was staying stick a lot, so there was a lot of slamming doors and loud noises throughout the night. Don't know if the main building would be better. Again, it is a nice hotel, but not so much so that it would inspire me to stay there again on my next trip to Phoenix.
