The entire hotel (including the room that I stayed in) was beautiful, clean, and well maintained. Also, the hotel staff was very friendly. In addition, my room had a great view of the Norfolk city skyline and of the Elizabeth River. And I should mention that the bed was very comfortable. Unfortunately, this is a typical hotel that people have to stay at for conferences. Hardly anything is complimentary. Services that are free at other places (local phone calls, Internet access, breakfast, etc) are over-priced at this hotel. Also, guest parking, which is an extra charge, is in a city owned faculty. Since it is shared with other places, hotel guests can only park on the 2nd & 5th floors (the later being on the outside roof of the parking garage). Finally, the check-out procedure was complicated. A copy of my bill was slipped under the room door on the day of check-out. Normally, if the bill looked okay, I could just leave the key inside of the room. But not at this hotel. I had to "check-out" using the TV (the check-out option was not easy to locate). Then I still had to carry my key down to the front desk because I wasn't sure where to leave it. If you are looking to stay at a reasonably priced hotel, then the Renaissance Portsmouth will probably not be your first (or second, or third, etc) choice. I included this evaluation so you'll know what to expect just in case you have to stay at this hotel.

I stayed at the Renaussance in March and LOVED it. The rooms were clean and elegant and the lobby beautiful and staff accommodating. The breakfast was delicious in the restaurant but the service was a bit slow. I would definitely stay here again ifin the area.

We stayed here b/c we attended a banquet in the upstairs ballroom, and it was convenient to run back to the room when I forgot my camera, etc. Room clean and quiet. Romantic view over river & city at night from our 17th floor. King bed mattress offered support but soft pillow top comfort. Room decent size. Fluffy extra pillows. Fast elevators. Recently renovated 2008 w fresh colors & granite counters. Hskeeping responded promptly at 11 pm for extra towels although they were still damp (& warm) from dryer so I hung them up to use in am. B'fast wait staff was exceptional (thanks X!) as we came in late and needed help getting tables reset from the reserved section where our large party had a separate eating area. Worth it to get b'fast included in your room. Receipt was $18 lower when we noted that b'fast was included w/ our room and they redid ticket. Full b'fast buffet w/ fruit, meats, etc., but pastries seemed prepackaged not fresh, and I had to ask the chef to heat pastry as mwave was in the kitchen. Also, the banquet dinner the night before left a lot to be desired, esp at $75/ plate & I was hoping for fresh seafood (They served bland dry prepackaged roast beef with shredded squash/ carrots side and dessert was a tasteless chocolate brownie. We were hungry and ate it, but not restaurant quality.) Otherwise staff seemed to be working hard to please and responsive to our requests. While the decor was elegant, we didn't feel out of place in our shorts on return from the beaches just 9 miles away by interstate. Parking $10/day but convenient and shares driveway with hotel. Would return.

If you are planning on having an event at this hotel, by all means AVOID it. The so called ""event planners"" are pretty much out there to rip all the money you have by adding charges that you didn't even know about. I had to call these people for their own business to set up my event and its always the same answer i got ""oooo i was about to call you"". even at the day of my event, from the moment i went to the reception to check in i was forced to wait 2 hours in the lobby even though i specifically stated it when i reserved the room that i was going to check in early, and did i mention that i called twice to confirm it. If you think that you can talk to a manager to fix your problems, forget it. they are all clicks that are out there to rip your money and respect. Unless you want pay their HIGH price and be treated like trash, eat a week old nasty food, and have no problem being lied to, you do not want to go there.

  • Best place in town.
