This historic hotel is in an excellent location, but it has not been renovated in a long while. The room did not have adjustable heating/cooling, so when we arrived on a 78 degree day, we could not switch the warm air to cool. We had to sleep with the windows open, and Chicago is loud! The bathroom was new (thankfully) but the bed was very uncomfortable. Again, the hotel is in a perfect location for local siteseeing, so it is a good choice if you don't plan on actually being in the hotel very much!

I booked this hotel for the price and the location. This place is really old!!! Lobby and bar area are updated and well maintained. My room and bathroom were very clean. I was comforted by the presence of the fire escape outside my window, because the fire emergency equipment seems antiquated. Would stay again, I like quirky.

This hotel is presented very accurately by the travel agency. It was built in 1839, so it is a little older and you can tell. There are quite a few original fixtures and some upgrades that could be done, but probably haven't to uphold the originality. There is a very faint musty smell, but I only noticed it immediately upon entering the room. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom sufficient. If you want/plan to do a lot of walking, go in warmer weather...it's a bit of a walk to many restaurants. There are several breakfast and fast food places close by and also a Walgreens for any extra needs. Above all, the architecture and decor of this hotel is spectacular. If you like more modern, pristinely new hotel rooms, do not stay here. But if you can appreciate an older, clean and beautiful hotel, stay here!!! Get a lake-view room and you will have a romantic atmosphere that can't be rivaled.

The only good thing about the hotel was it's historic value, which was kind of cool and I found out after our stay that it is supposed to be extremely haunted, not to mention owned by Al Capone at one time. I found all that interesting. I had read the location was excellent to a tourist, which I disagree. The hotel is on the right street, but located about as far South as possible. There is a lot of walking to do to get where the action is. The hotel is very old, and shows it. Our room appeared it was in the middle of being remodeled. A lot of the crown molding and trim was either missing or not painted to match. High ceilings which were cool, but extremely dated decor. Don't plan on eating in the on-site restaurants, or using the horrible exercise room. The lounge was okay, and quite crowded in the evenings which was nice. Don't forget about the picketers outside the front door that we were told have been picketing there for years. It did seem the room was clean and acceptable, but just old. It wasn't a terrible experience, but I would certainly choose a different hotel on my next trip there.
