The Essex has recently been renovated. Unfortunately the restaurant was still under renovation so was not open. But there are a ton of great places to eat in the area as well as Kitty O'Sheas right across the street. Staff were helpful and friendly, the room, although a bit small was nice and I and my wife both appreciated the reading lights by the beds - a nice touch. Flat screen TV's in the rooms were also great, the only problem was the channel listings in the rooms were not current and the front desk didn't have updated information either. They offer a continental breakfast which was exactly that, wish they could have also had cereal and milk, but it is what it is and was good for a quick bite before hitting the town. The hotel is in a great location, close to great sights in downtown Chicago and easy access to the metro and buses. We had a nice view of Lake Michigan even though we weren't facing the lake. We will definitely stay there again.

I stayed here in 2008, and the hotel was slightly trashy. The rooms are small and nothing special, and the cleanliness was sub par. The toilet ran all night, and the shower was caked with dirt. Very old hotel.

Our experience at Chicago's Essex Inn was alright. Not much better or worse than most motels. The bed was fluffy, while the room was overheated. I overheard another guest complain that she went as far as to turn the heater off completely! My husband was slightly disappointed that there wasn't a microwave available in the room, as he wanted popcorn to watch his movie. The t.v. and other appliances all were in working order and the very best thing about the Inn was that they offer free shuttle to wherever you were going! A suggestion for dinner: Choose a restaurant other than the one located inside the Inn! It was expensive and didn't have much variety. Would we stay again? You betcha! Location is great, staff was helpful, and of course the free shuttle was the clincher! They have some mightly nice bellmen there, also.
