Reviewing this hotel is a tricky business. Much charm, nice location, but very small rooms and even smaller bathrooms. This place is not for the faint of heart. Front desk crew ranged from disinterested to rude. The bed in my very pregnant adult daughter's room was broken and when we reported it, the older lady at the desk asked: "how did you break the bed". That same night, the people in the room next to my daughter had the TV very loud until 4am. The front desk wasn't able to do anything about it. I really think she should have been comped for that night. All that being said, I liked my room and I loved staying in downtown Phoenix. And the pool area on the third story roof was lovely. It would be nice if there was a spa to go with the pool.

A charming old hotel. Yes, the rooms are small, but they ar clean, and the beds were comfortable. The bathrooms are not the largest, and don't have anything approaching vanity space, but the water pressure was great, and hot water was plentiful. It was too cool for swimming on my visit, but the pool & sundeck was spotless. Steam heat was powerful; almost too much so. The only way to control it was to shut off the valve to the radiator, then it was fine. The staff was great, and very accomodating. When I go back, I'll try to get one of the suites for a bit more room. The bar & restarant were not open when I visited, but they were to re-open soon. A neat, old hotel with a very interesting history.

The hotel was located right downtown just a shame that there wasn't much to do in the area. Paid a lot more for my room then others in the the hotel. The hotel is old and really needs some renovations (new carpets!) The staff was great especially the bartenders...the others a little quirky. The pool is great and the best thing going for the hotel as far as amenities. The room was okay...I have stayed in a lot worse so you will get over the initial oh my god feeling that you might have when you first check in. Eventually the charm of the ghost stories will take over. I stayed here because I was trying to save my organization some money...so if you are looking to do the same this would be a good alternative. I would stay here if I had to again but would shop around more before making that choice.

Its cute, its quaint and its a miserable place to try to get some sleep. Seeing it on a 30 minute museum tour would have been fine. I actually prefer to stay in older hotels with more local 'flavor' than the chain hotels but the Hotel San Carlos was a nightmare. It was so small you could sit on the throne and your knees touched the opposite wall and I am only 5'6"" tall. My husband was stepping out of the cold shower (hot water was nowhere to be found) and bumped the flush handle on the toilet with his knee. The tiles in the shower stall were cracked and moldy. The room was so tiny we had to take turns walking around the bed. All of the guests across the hall from us had to be evacuated during the night due to a plumbing break and the water dripped two floors down to the restaurant where we had to move to a different table because of the water coming out of the ceiling. The hot and cool air was controlled by opening and closing the vent cover...the vent cover was missing so I had to stuff a pillow in it to stop the cold air. The advertised exercise room was two blocks down in a health club where you had to pay $6 to get in, the pool was not heated and was full of leaves and crud. I could go on and on...just don't stay there. The staff was very friendly but maybe it was because they thought it was funny that we were tied into a online travel website ""Good Buy"" deal and couldn't check out early without paying full cost on the room.

I attended a conference recently, and had the luck that my conference at the Phoenix Convention Center coincided with a concert a Dodge Theater and I didn't have to rent a car! The hotel is cute. It was a nice break from the conventional hotel room with all the history and old photos of Phoenix. The food was fantastic! Not at all what I expected with the low rate I paid for the room. Overall the place could use a little TLC, more counter space in the bathroom would've been nice, but I would definately stay there again. Nice staff, unbeatable rate and fantastic location and food!
